CHAPTER 10

Amy knew that the only sensible and useful thing that she could do was to try to seem normal no matter how abnormal the situation was. Leaving Stacy and Luke to get on with it once Callie had turned up, bearing warm chocolate and orange muffins and more coffee was still surprisingly hard even though Callie had also offered Stacy awkwardly sincere sympathy that had been combined with a steely determination to keep what she called the vultures away for as long as Stacy needed it. She’d been so firm about that that Amy had almost considered feeling sorry for any reporter who was either brave enough or stupid enough to try it on with her.

“You’re a dark horse, Stacy Clarke.” Callie had said once she’d been introduced to Luke but Amy was pretty sure that she’d assessed him and recognised the species that she’d probably have flippantly christened ‘Spookus, Marinus’ if she’d grown up learning Latin in the way that Peter and Colin and quite probably Luke all had. She was every bit as sure that Callie was a lot happier because she knew that he’d be around and he definitely seemed to appreciate her in a frank, open, and somehow inoffensive way that reminded her of Colin, which made sense because they came from the same world.

“Do they breed you specially for this sort of thing in the Army?” She asked because it struck her that the tone needed to be lightened. That wasn’t because she was making light of Stacy’s grief and fear but because in her experience you had to remember that life was made from sunshine and shadows, just like one of her favourite quilt patterns, and there was nothing wrong with seeing flashes of sunshine while you were in the depths of grief. Quite the opposite, in fact, because they were a signpost to a time when you’d be able to cope a lot better than it felt as if you were currently managing to.

“I’m sorry?” He increased her certainty that they did by looking politely puzzled as he smiled at her.

“You’re very like Colin in a lot of ways. Charming, oh so easy to underestimate, and you really seem to care about everyone that you meet.”

“All three of the Armed Services train you to do that and the Army was quite an old-fashioned sort of place to grow up in, which I think is what you’re trying to find a tactful way to say. If you do that googling about Royal Marine Commando Officers that I suggested that Richard; did which I know that you and this charming young lady almost certainly will if you haven’t already done it, then you’ll see that the Royal Marines ethos is, and I’m happy to quote it because I learned it off by heart because I liked it so much. ‘Combining the Commando values (excellence, integrity, self-discipline and humility), the Commando qualities (courage, determination, unselfishness and cheerfulness), with the Commando mindset: “Be the first to understand; the first to adapt and respond; and the first to overcome.
